October 2019 Photo Hunt

Believe it or not it is 10 October as I prepare this post; the weather has been awful and looks like it will stay this way until the end of the month.  So on yet another wet day, I'm using my time to get jobs done, in this case the photo hunt photos.  Then if a better photo opportunity presents itself, I can change things!  So, please read on.

1   Umbrella

I had it in my mind that there was an umbrella shop in Skipton with a lovely display of umbrellas in the window but as we drove past a few days ago I could not see it....  But I decided to use my own 'umbrella'.  I follow Lucy on Attic24 and back in October 2018 I noticed a post which I sent to my friend; click here to see this post.  A week or two later my friend had made an umbrella with her granddaughters.  They had a lot of fun so that motivated me to make my own umbrella.

It's only tiny but is perfect for the mouse and its home that I added to complement
the umbrella.  I agree it's not waterproof but it'll not be going outside!

2   Wet

So much choice for this word; I feel as if all of Lancashire is wet....

This autumn flowering plant is sagging under the
weight of the relentless rain...
Poor Schizostylis!

3  Puddles

I have a wet garden....  As a rule I always have to wear wellies!

4  Overflowing

I know the word is overflowing but for some years now this well near where I live had been
UNDERFLOWING......  It flows down the hill (to the left of this photo) and across
the road; when the temperature dips below freezing, the road is interesting!
Click here to see a short video clip of this well.

5  Splash

Top left - water coming into the garden and flowing down a concrete
channel which I have named The Zambezi.

Top right - ready with my brush to sweep it clear of leaves etc.

Bottom left - looking back to where I've swept.

Bottom right - more Zambezi to sweep!

Click here to see me splashing about in the Zambezi in my wellies.
I know how to have a good time!

Own Choice

As I write this I realised I could have used this photo for Wet!  Read on...

Towards the end of June this year, Beloved rang to say he'd found a wet sparrowhawk and did I want to come to our fields to see it?  Of course I did.  Beloved had seen the long grass moving and on closer examination he found the wet bird.  He picked it up and put it down on the drive but it could only hop about.  So he picked it up and phoned me.

Here is our feathered friend.  I suggested he place it on the roof bars of his van and almost
at once it flew off.  We came to the conclusion that it had dried out as I drove up
to the fields.  We've assumed it is a sparrowhawk!

Well, it is now the end of the month and we've had some dry days....  but overall October was damp.

Thanks to Hawthorn once again for organising this.

  1. What a beautiful bird it does indeed look like a Sparrowhawk, well done for saving it, poor thing. It was a wet start to the month wasn't it, I failed a bit on getting out with the camera then partly as it is not waterproof! Loving your wee umbrella, perfect for a mouse.

    1. Glad you like the umbrella; so much fun to make. As I write on the last day of October, the sun is out and there is a gentle breeze. But worry not, rain is due tomorrow!

  2. Love your mouse under an umbrella - most appropriate for your blog. The close up of the wet sparrowhawk is amazing. Such detail in the feathers and as for those staring eyes.....scary if you were his lunch! I know exactly where that trough is in the wall and noticed the other day how much water was flowing over and under it. Love all your pictures and think the one of the sparrowhawk has to be my favourite. x

    1. Thanks Jak. Beloved was so lucky to rescue the sparrowhawk. Sadly it was not possible to get take any other photos of it. I noticed how the tip of its top beak has a 'slot' in its lower beat. Nature is amazing.

    1. Yes, so lucky with soggy sparrowhawk; I bet it was not impressed by Beloved's actions but without them it might have died.

  4. Lovely photos of the garden & flowers, even when wet. Of course my favourite is the bird & we once had to help a kookaburra dry out before he could fly off again. He'd fallen in a open topped water tank. Have a lovely weekend & take care.

    1. It's good to rescue wildlife. We also had to rescue a juvenile Great Spotted woodpecker but for some strange reason I did not take a photo..... Looks like we'll be having a wet weekend....

  5. I love the close up shot of the wet flowers but the second shot of the soggy sparrowhawk is my favourite, it's good you were both able to rescue it :)

  6. Such stunning photographs. Such a privilege to see the sparrowhawk so close although I actually would have been terrified as birds really do scare me for some reason but trying to push just how I can get to them 🙂
