16 April Photo Hunt - The Colour Purple

Golly gosh it's Friday again....  my week seems to have more than one Friday in it as it is often Friday....

Ah the colour purple, one of my favourite colours, after red, black and white!

I'm only going to share a few photos with you as I could have gone on 'for ever'...

The following plants are from my previous garden.

Primula viallii, sadly a short-lived plant for me.

My parent hellebore which did move with me to our new home
but I can't find a photo of it here ....

Fritillary, possibly Persica.  Again short-lived!

Cobaea scandens, living in my polytunnel as a
half-hardy annual.

A type of allium, christophi perhaps.

I once had a small collection of these lovely auriculas
but gave them away shortly before we moved here.

Rheum palmatum, the purple one!  It grows from nothing at the start of the season to be about
2 m+ wide and over 2 m tall.  It is a great plant if you have room for it to spread its
leaves.  I call my main plant Gloria and when we moved here I brought 7 or 8 pieces
with me.  So far they have all survived, some better than others.  Last year a late frost
damaged the emerging flower stalks so I had no flowers.  Fingers crossed this
does not happen again!

Its flower spike that can be 2 m (or more) tall.

Of course, I don't limit myself to purple in the garden.

Persian tiles, crochet blanket.

A largely purple blanket for the cat rescue charity.

Thanks Astrid for this week's word.  I'm off to check regularly for new participants.  Please click here to return to her page.

Bye!

  1. I could not agree more with your opening sentence....I find Friday's come round so quickly too. What a lovely lot of 'purple' pictures. I love Alliums and your Primula viallii looks as though you have dipped the tips in red paint!! The new leaves of my Rheum palmatum that you gave me are just starting to unfurl too. Your purple crochet blankets are gorgeous as usual and full of 'The Colour Purple' too. xx

    1. Thanks. I like the 'dipped in red paint' comment. I had meant to include the poem When I am old by Jenny Joseph but forgot! The first line is 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple ...' x

    2. I must admit when I first heard that poem it resonated with me too 😃

  2. I was looking forward to seeing what you would come up with. Love your selection. Like you, I could have gone on for ever with this one. We too had the primulas ... they only lasted a year. We have had more luck with the cobea though. We grew it from packet seed last year and planted it over the arbour outside and it did really well. We collected the seed and have planted them this year and they are doing quite well. I am waiting a bit before I dare let them feel the outside air though ... it's just been soooooo cold. x

    1. Thanks! I am resisting the urge to plant any seeds as it is too cold and my greenhouse is not heated. I don't want the extra work of having to remember to cover up young plants at night! Good luck with the cobaea.

  3. Ah yes, Friday again, but nearly finished here & I'll have to post tomorrow & all I've been able to find are purple flowers, so that will be it. Love your floral photos & is the Rheum related to our eating rhubarb as the flowers look very similar. Thought you might post either quilts or crochet for this one. Lovely! Take care, stay safe & hugs.

    1. Yes the Rheum is related to the edible variety. You can read more about it

I've shown a purple quilt before hence my choice of crochet!

  4. Purple is a difficult one for me as the colour doesn't really figure in my life so I'm not taking part this week, though I'm still looking to see what everyone else has chosen. I love the flowers in the first pic, 'dipped in red paint' describes them perfectly :)

    1. Thanks. It's amazing what I can find when I look through my archives, so many things I've forgotten about so it is good that the Photo Hunt helps me to remember them.

    1. It's fun to join in! Glad you like my selection of purple things! For a few days after my post went live, I kept coming across more purple things, eg, Wispa chocolate bar!
